The House

The forest in the mountains, located in the state of Rio de Janeiro where Lygia built her first home, named Boa Liga.

"... I refer to Boa Liga as the "source" because that is where my imagination is always more active ..."

"... where I walk, on the earth and the water ..."

"... benches where I sit, contemplating: what ending will I give to this or that? ..."

"... leaning on the window sill of the room where I write (eyeing the greenery) I give free rein to my dreams. Then, wherever I go, bit by bit, I start to give shape to the characters, and to the projects, and to my plans for life – to everything I dreamed about in the "source". The Idea of creating a Publishing House for my characters came to me there in Boa Liga."

The House Lygia Bojunga was in answer to need to examine and understand the road the characters of the author must travel before arriving in the hands of the readers. For many years Lygia has pursued, in various ways, an ever deeper understanding of the object called Book. The new House (developed with characteristic discretion) is not intended for the publication of other authors – but for Lygia’s characters only.

The Editorial Department of Casa Lygia Bojunga is located in Santa Teresa, a vintage neighborhood, in Rio.

"... although I lived in Rio as a child, I only began to know Santa when I was 19. I immediately fell in love with the place, and wanted to live there. (The sort of desire you make come true). At the time I was preparing for examinations in medicine. I had romantic ideas about alleviating the suffering of those who came to me, meaning my patients. But from my very first contacts with Santa, my plans took off in another direction: I was awarded first prize in an audition for a part in a play to be inaugurated in Santa Teresa’s Theatre DUSE. As a result I began an intense (but short) theatrical career and my romantic ideas now turned towards bringing artistic emotions to those who came to me, that is, my theatre audience. From an early age I was attracted to the stage, so much so that at school I took pleasure in organizing groups to participate in amateur theatre productions. There was however another vocation which I was attracted to (on and off), a vocation which appeared when, at seven years old, I invented my first characters. But it was only in my late 30’s that I have assumed completely my literary vocation, along with my need to live with books, to live for books, to live from books, and the need to feed the imagination of those who came to me, that is to say, my readers."

Lygia was the first author (outside of Europe and the United States) to receive the Hans Christian Andersen medal, so many times referred to as the Nobel Prize for books for young people, worldwide. At the time Lygia had only six books published:The companions, Angélica, The yellow bag, The godmother's house, Tightrope and The chintz sofa.

The opinions of the Andersen prize international jury (who elected Lygia as the Author highly commended for the medal) were reproduced in an article by Ana Maria Machado (at the time a member of the jury) in the newspaper "Jornal do Brasil":

After the Andersen prize, Lygia’s books spread to several countries, in 23 different languages.

In 2004 Lygia received, in Sweden, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award - the world's largest prize for children's and youth literature, and the second largest literature prize in the world.

The author’s books are here displayed according to the order that the contracts with her former editors ended and her characters moved to the house that she created for them.

Portraits of Carolina was published at the inauguration of Casa Lygia Bojunga, in 2002.

Retratos de Carolina

Portraits of Carolina (Retratos de Carolina)

The book is divided into two parts – the first describes Carolina’s growth into maturity – from an insecure child to a young woman determined to carve out her destiny with her own hands. The second part of the book changes from the story of Carolina, into an encounter between Carolina and Lygia. This unusual development has inevitable result: a duel between two strong and determined women. On one side is Carolina, who insists on being present after the story ends and who decides her creator must rewrite her life in the narrative. On the other side is Lygia who becomes a character in the book, attempting to control her own creation, Carolina. Gradually the interplay between Carolina and Lygia in the same house and in the same space appears quite natural. The conflict between Carolina’s desire to have a different life story, and the power of Lygia’s pen to create life and death, reveals a unique moment of literary creation.

Portraits of Carolina is not to be considered a book for youngsters. Yet, as Lygia says, if the author-publisher is not careful, Carolina can find itself on the same bookshelf as The companionsThe yellow bag and other books so much loved by young people. However, it’s interesting to note that readers of her books for young people are coming to maturity at the very time when Lygia’s Publishing House is bringing to the market yet another of her books not written specifically for youngsters. The publication of Portraits of Carolina provides another opportunity for her faithful readers to again experience the pleasure of reading one of the author’s books.

In April 2003 The House received additional residents: The yellow bag, The godmother's house and Tightrope, three of Lygia’s books which have become literary classics for the youth of Brasil.

The yellow bag (A bolsa amarela)

This is the third of Lygia's books.

In the novel we encounter the exhilarating ease of a child at play, present in so many of her books. The story maintains a perfect balance between the liberty of imagination and the restrictions of reality. The story is of a young girl who is in conflict with herself and also with her family. She represses three powerful desires: a desire to grow up, a desire to be a boy and a desire to become a writer. Through the revelation of these desires (which are in conflict with traditional family values) this sensitive and imaginative girl tells of her daily life, describing the real world of herself and her family mixed with the world created by her fertile imagination, which is filled with secret friends and fantasies. As episodes real and fantastic take place, a spiritual adventure develops which eventually allows the girl to come to terms with herself.

The yellow bag received the Gold Seal Prize, from the Brazilian Section of IBBY, given each year for the book judged to be the "Best for Children". The book also received the Certificate of Honour from IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People).Translated into various languages, the book was adapted for theatres in Brazil, Belgium and Sweden.

A casa da madrinha

The godmother’s house (A casa da madrinha)

This is the fourth book written by Lygia. One more delightful narrative in which, very much in the style of the author daily realities coexist with fantasy. The main theme portrays the harsh reality of having to survive in a large city but, at the same time, the dreams and hopes which must accompany humans in order to alleviate hardships, appear throughout the story. Even more than a classic of Brazilian literature for young people, the book can be considered to be an excellent metaphor of the great expectations that human beings pursue in their struggle for life.

Translated into various languages, The godmother's house was adapted for theatre in Brazil and Sweden.

Corda bamba

Tightrope (Corda bamba)

This is the fifth book of the author.

Tightrope is a breath of courage leading us to an encounter with dormant forces. With considerable tact, Lygia, in her inimitable style, "stretches" the imagination and leads us over the bridge which connects two extremes: reality and fantasy. Taking a psychological approach the Author focusses on death and it’s related stigmas. Told with skill and subtle humour, the story is a lesson in learning to live with loss. It throws light on questions which pass by in obscurity during everyday life. and lead us to believe that we can walk alone succesfully even when on a tightrope.

Tightrope was adapted to be produced on a TV Swedish Channel: it was performed in theatres in Brazil, Germany and Holland, and received the prize "Highly Recommended", from the National Foundation of Books for Young People.

Tchau

Tchau

Tchau consists of four compact narratives where, in her recognized style, Lygia moves with total liberty between realism and fantasy. She writes about passion, friendship, jealousy and the need to create.

Tchau won the prize "The Best Book for Adolescents" – National Foundation of Books for Young People, and was included in the selection of best books by the International Library for Young People - Munique, Germany.

In 2004 more 7 books of Lygia arrived in the House:

Angélica

Angélica

This book has in one of its chapters a full theatrical play, and - as the previous book - has won important prizes.

"When you no longer want to be what you are – can you change your skin and be another one?
When you can’t abide the way your family behaves – can you bring about change?
And when you are unable to find a job – can you invent one?
If you have to sell a piece of yourself in order to survive, can you be in good spirits?
And when you are old and alone in the world can you remain positive?".

The characters who raise these and other questions come together in this book and develop a play called Angélica.

Through creativity each one finds a way of being increasingly content.

The chintz sofa (O sofá estampado)

One of the most famous books of Lygia Bojunga, The chintz sofa tells a story apparently simple (the passion of an armadillo for a beautiful cat). A bunch of picturesque characters appear in the story to convey, through their actions and dialogues an amusing and moving criticism of our society.

Os colegas

My friend the painter (O meu amigo pintor)

The moving encounter of an adolescent with the tormented soul of an artist. For the youngster, the fascinating revelation of the world of colours and forms; the interpretation of life through an artist’s intuition and experience. For the painter, the presence of sensitiveness and enthusiasm of a young friend in the adventure of discovering the artist’s world and the comfort brought to the drama of a solitary life.

Translated into various idioms. My friend the painter was adapted for theatre by Lygia Bojunga and produced/directed by Bia Lessa, receiving the two most important theatrical prizes awarded at that time: The Molière Prize and the Mambembe Prize.

THE BOOK TRILOGY (A trilogia do Livro)

The three books to arrive in the House in the year of 2004 form what Lygia's readers call "The Book Trilogy" ("Book - an encounter", "The making of Ana Paz" and "Landscape"). But each one is completely independent from the others. If in one the approach is through the reader, and in the second, through the writer, in the third, reading and writing become one.

Livro - um encontro

BOOK – an encounter (LIVRO – um encontro)

Book - an encounter is a vivid account which transmits, in a highly inventive manner, the intimate emotions and sentiments felt by a writer in her relationship with books.

Paisagem

Landscape (Paisagem)

Landscape is a narrative linking two elements contained in the process of writing a story: creation (the role of the author) and re-creation (the role of the reader). Lygia examines the relationship between the two elements by creating a character – a young man called Lourenço – who corresponds with an author he admires.

Landscape brings new meanings to the world of words, formats and emotions which together comprise a literary work.

The making of Ana Paz (Fazendo Ana Paz)

In The making of Ana Paz the story takes shape from fragmented memories, as if they were photographs from an old album.

An author in search of characters... or is it characters in search of an author?

Ana Paz is quite different to Lygia’s other characters: she has a "specific address" and a commitment with her past which she has to fulfill.

In 2007: Dos vinte 1

One out of twenty (Dos vinte 1)

From each of the 20 books she has written, Lygia chose a chapter (or an extract from the text) for which she has a preference.

For those who have previously come into contact with characters in Lygia's books, this new publication "Dos vinte 1" provides an excellent opportunity to renew acquaintances. For those reading Lygia Bojunga for the first time, the book gives a flavour of the most famous characters she has created.

There is something for all ages - children, adolescents and adults.

In 2009, another book has been launched:

Dos vinte 1

DARLING (Querida)

Darling deals with an emotion that we are all acquainted with: jealousy.
It is this emotion that, in two intriguing encounters in a remote corner of the
Atlantic Forest, interweave the lives of the two main characters in the book.

When asked if DARLING is a book for children and adolescents
Lygia answered: "Possibly it can be;
it depends on what sort of child or adolescent they are…"

In 2016:

Dos vinte 1

Intramural

Intramural could be listed as a novel, but in my opinion it has more to do with a literary witness – an unpretentious account of how lost we can get in the effort of writing a novel and how, in getting lost, we end up seeing clearer our true role in life. This book is not aimed for young readers, but for those who are interested in the intricacies of writing books and in the fulfillment of a life project.
